Cia. Núria Esquius will present La cupletista at the Espai Àgora in Sabadell (Barcelona) on October 11th at 7.30 p.m. The show is a fragment of our history that revives songs from the Catalan cuplé and celebrates the figure of the female composer in the 1920s, with special attention to Càndida Pérez Martínez, author of some of the genre’s most famous pieces. The show also evokes spaces and figures from that era, such as the Teatre Arnau, the Bodega Bohemia, Copérnico Olver—known as “el Gordito”— and the legendary Raquel Meller, as well as sicalipsis, a concept very present in the popular culture of the time. With a relatable, fun, and at the same time informative tone, the work seeks to celebrate a musical genre that was the star of Catalan stages in a period not too distant.
