Cia. Mea Culpa

DESCRIPTION

Cia. Mea Culpa was founded in 2012 out of a desire to bring theatre and literature closer to young people. After several years devoted to theatre education with teenagers and young adults, and having witnessed first-hand their great potential and energy, the company’s members felt that the best way to achieve this goal was to create a project that would bring culture into the classroom. This led to the idea of staging the compulsory high school reading texts, transforming this “obligation” into a more engaging experience by giving faces, voices and movement to the characters students encountered in their books.

During its early years, the company focused on bringing prescribed literary works closer to young audiences through theatre, producing El darrer dia del Cafè de la Granota (Jesús Moncada, 2012), Mirall trencat (2015), and La plaça del Diamant (Mercè Rodoreda, 2018). These productions have toured across Europe with the support of the Institut Ramon Llull.

In 2022, the company embarked on a new path with CR#SH (Tothom pot caure), a play about adolescence and mental health written and directed by Miquel Mas Fiol. The production stands as a powerful example of socially engaged theatre and a valuable tool for reflection among audiences.

Today, following the removal of prescribed readings from the high school curriculum, the company continues to champion Catalan literature and language through the theatrical podcast 4 gats, which humorously revisits some of the most representative authors in Catalan literature.

With Burpees (2025), co-produced with Teatre Principal de Palma, Cia. Mea Culpa also explores digital extremism, online hate speech and internet-based cults. Written and directed by Miquel Mas Fiol, the production was presented at the Temporada Alta Festival in Girona and ran at Teatre Akadèmia in Barcelona in November 2025.
